All Things New

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down for these words are trustworthy and true (Revelation 21:5).”

Things made new tend to excite people. We can spend a bundle of money in order to look on a new kitchen or bathroom with pride. There is something within us that admires taking something tired and worn out and making it new. Yet what we make new will not last; our attempts to make new will ultimately fail in the face of time.

Ah, but where we fail, God excels. As the Author of life, he makes new in a fashion beyond our ability. We hear some of this newness as we read in His Word concerning how he brought the dead to life. We experience some of this newness as our lives have been united to Christ. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Yet what God is doing on a limited scale now as we are being renewed from the inside out, one day as the text above makes plain, He will extend to “all things.” If our life is found in Christ then as we look out on this tired old world, we can know that one day we will witness the renewal of all things - the entire creation. The new life we have now in Christ is the first fruit of the day when we will walk out into a creation in which all things have been made new. We have God’s “trustworthy and true” Word on it. I can’t wait for that day when not just some, but rather all things, will be made new!
